The mammal collection was initiated by David Hurst Thomas as part of the Harvard-Nevada expedition in the mid-late 1960s. Since that time it has grown in an ad-hoc manner with specimens added by William Hildebrandt and other graduate students as part of their dissertation research. Since 2001, Christyann Darwent has focused on increasing the number of complete specimens from California, and since 2006, Teresa Steele has increased the number of European species.
