Teaching Doubt and Faith in Video Imagery and the Trial of Officers Beating Rodney King

This presentation takes a step back from recent action around police caught on tape beating and killing of African Americans to the arguable origination video of this phenomenon, the beating of Rodney King, and it's use in the trial that acquitted the officers subsequently. It can serve as an example of how to present media events to students in ways that raise simple yet pertinent questions about media form. In this case, these questions pertain to the dangers of naive faith in the video image but also our necessary dependance on visual realism for exposing injustice.

Friday, January 15, 2021 at 3:10 PM PST - Department-wide meeting to discuss initiatives

Dear all,

As members of the UC Davis Department of Anthropology’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEIC), we have been meeting regularly since our last department-wide meeting on June 26, 2020. Since then, we have begun work on a DEIC website. We have also carefully reviewed and discussed the letter written by graduate students. Together, we have thought through the action items therein and the possibilities for incorporating them into our department. As a result, we have expanded upon the letter from graduate students, and in some cases revised it. Where revisions were made, they sustained the original goal of the letter: to institutionalize anti-racism and build solidarity with underrepresented members of our community.

The updated document is attached, and we will hold a meeting to discuss these action items on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 3:10 PM PST. The zoom invitation is below. To facilitate our discussion, we ask that you read the document before the meeting and come prepared to actively engage with its content. We will structure our meeting so that members of our department can a) pose questions, b) offer different perspectives/disagree, and c) offer elaborations and/or additional resources. Due to time considerations, discussions about each lettered topic will be timed. We will convene ongoing conversations about each topic through focus group sessions in the Winter and Spring quarters of 2021. We look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Sincerely,

Suzana Sawyer, Teresa Steele, Giulia Gallo, Marie McDonald, and Kat Morucci
